SHALLOW TRUTH EP

So MK (Of the BLG collective) and Nutral released their 'Shallow Truth' Ep this evening, comprising of four hip hop instrumentals.

A very solid piece of productive work from the Leicester chaps opens with 'Pearls of Wisdom', a smooth wake up tune, very dreamy with a lot of atmosphere. It sounds like when you wake up in the summer and eat cereal. I feel this tune typifies the EP in a sense of setting the tempo and the mood.

It progresses with 'Desperado' Using a sample from an old western film and wonky, rattling drums. The instrumental progresses and builds with a rhapsody of atmospheric sounds and noises.

The penultimate tune on EP is entitled 'NightVision'. It starts with a slow swirling synth, and the drums start to creep in. It reminded me of something Roots Manuva might have vocalled around the time of Awfully Deep. In this track around where the chorus might sit there is a nice little breakdown where the drums take a sideline.

Finally the EP climaxes with what I think is the most poignant and rememberable piece of the four, 'Shamen Love'. it starts instantly with a simple drum beat and piano loop, very similar to Dre's production style around 2001. Short after a minute in a nasal synth creeps in and beds perfectly into the tune.

The EP is available for download here and defiantly worth a listen.
